German A. Goncharov
In June 1952, the 24-year-old physicist German Goncharov was sent to Arzamas,
the secret Soviet weapons laboratory, to work on Andrei Sakharov's "Layer Cake"
design for the H-bomb. He has continued to work on the Soviet nuclear program
ever since. Goncharov has been awarded numerous prizes for this research
including the Lenin Prize in 1962 and the Hero of Socialist Labor in 1971. He
is a member of the commission established by Russian President Boris Yeltsin
that is currently reviewing the history of the Soviet nuclear program and
identifying documents to be declassified. Goncharov has written numerous
articles about nuclear weapons including "Milestones in the History of Hydrogen
Bomb Construction in the Soviet Union and the United States," which appeared in
the November 1996 issue of "Physics Today."
