Dancing monkey cartoonYou can't make a monkey out of me....

The Scopes trial challenged the fundamental beliefs of some Americans, who responded with outrage -- and humor. Some wrote songs defending their religious convictions, championing William Jennings Bryan, and mocking the idea that humans could have descended from apes.

The following tunes come from the archives at Bryan College, in Dayton, Tennessee. They present one side of the Scopes trial argument. Visit this site's gallery to see political cartoons advocating the other side's views.
