Architect Louis Sullivan completed the stylish, modular and extremely influential Schlesinger and Meyer Department Store in 1904. Soon purchased by the merchant firm of Carson Pirie and Company, it was enlarged in 1906, and expanded even further south along State Street in 1961.

Carson Pirie Scott & Co. still sells its wares in this retail palace today.
